|CCAF mourns death of Chair Ronald C. Thompson, FCA|
|Tuesday, 19 July 2011 01:00|
In a tragic boating accident on a lake in Québec north of Ottawa, CCAF Chair Ronald C. Thompson passed away unexpectedly Sunday, July 17, 2011.
According to news reports, Mr. Thompson's boat overturned in the severe windstorm that struck the Ottawa-Gatineau area that evening.
"This is devastating news for all of us who knew Ron," said CCAF Vice-Chair Philip Howell on behalf of the Board of Governors. "Our thoughts are with his wife Jane and his family. They have lost a person of great character, of exceptional warmth, and of enthusiasm for life."
Mr. Thompson was elected Chair of CCAF's Board of Governors in March 2009, after a highly successful career in the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG). He joined the OAG in 1977, and retired as an Assistant Auditor General in 2008. He held many senior positions, including Interim Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, and responsibility for the OAG's International Relations Program.
In the latter role, he earned the Friend of the Fellows Award from the 2006 class of Fellows graduating from CCAF's International Program.
"CCAF has benefitted greatly from Mr. Thompson's involvement with the Foundation over the years," Mr. Howell said.
"In particular, as Chair, he played a key role in the development of a new strategic framework for CCAF. He led our Board with a clear vision for the future and a willingness to take on any task to help us get there. His influence on the organization will be felt for many years."
He will be dearly missed by his friends and colleagues at CCAF.
