|Merwan Saher appointed Alberta Auditor General|
|Monday, 03 May 2010 20:00|
Merwan Saher has been appointed Auditor General of Alberta.
Mr. Saher, who has been with the Office of the Auditor General of Alberta since 1980, was named Assistant Auditor General in 1996. He has managed audits, been an instructor for Office courses, and served as the head of professional practice. He was the head of the Office's communications and quality control teams, and led the Office's assurance and systems auditing in a number of Ministries.
In April 2010, an all-party Select Special Auditor General Search Committee recommended Mr. Saher to the legislature as the next Auditor General. The Auditor General is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor following the passage of a motion by the Legislative Assembly.
Albert MLA Len Mitzel, the search committee chair, said, "Mr. Saher brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge that will benefit the Legislative Assembly and all Albertans. Having served 30 years with the office of the Auditor General of Alberta, he is familiar with our processes and I have no doubt will continue to provide effective oversight of public spending in his new role."
A chartered accountant, Mr. Saher worked as a private sector audit professional in Britain and Iran before coming to Alberta. He has been involved in the work of the Canadian Council of Legislative Auditors and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Mr. Saher succeeds Fred Dunn, who retired in February.
