Monday, 19 April 2010 20:00

The federal Commissioner of the Environment and of Sustainable Development, Scott Vaughan, has released a discussion paper called Managing Sustainable Development

Scott Vaughan

The paper is intended to generate discussion about management approaches associated with sustainable development, such as measurability, and build awareness of sustainable development practices.

It identifies challenges associated with managing sustainable development and provides managers with examples of practices and analytical techniques to address these challenges.

The study is the first step in identifying criteria for auditing management practices and performance as they relate to sustainable development.

Highlights of the document include:

  • The definition of sustainable development found in federal legislation and its distinguishing characteristics from a management perspective.
  • The key management challenges of sustainable development and useful analytical techniques and practices for addressing these challenges.
  • Measuring and reporting on sustainable development performance and standards and best practices for indicators, accounting practices, certification, and reporting.
  • A summary of existing federal directives and frameworks intended to support sustainable development planning and decision making.

Copies of the paper are available from the website of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada:
