How to Increase the Impact of Environmental Performance Audits
Tuesday, 01 April 2014 01:00

How to Increase the Impact of Environmental Performance AuditsThe CCAF is pleased to announce the release of a discussion paper, How to Increase the Impact of Environmental Performance Audits, authored collaboratively by CCAF and the Offices of the Auditor General of Canada and of Québec.

"The idea of a discussion paper," said Paul Lohnes, President and CEO of the CCAF, "is to stimulate sharing and innovation in the performance audit community. It is meant to be provocative, not definitive."

The paper contains a number of ideas on how to increase the impact of environmental performance audits, from the planning through reporting phases of the performance audit process.

"Performance auditors want to have a positive impact on the programs and entities they audit," said Jean-Cinq Mars, Sustainable Development Commissioner, Vérificateur général du Québec, and a co-author of the paper, adding "Environmental audits play a crucial and vital role in achieving environmental goals and objectives. This is a 'must-read' for those who want to strengthen the impact of their audits."

According to the OAG Canada's Neil Maxwell, Interim Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, "We encourage collaborative audits in this field. This is a great example of collaborating to generate ideas that are helpful to the entire performance audit community. Even the writing of this paper has helped to stimulate some new thinking in our Office."

The discussion paper is a based on a keynote presentation by John Reed (Vice-President, Performance Audit, CCAF) and Jean Cinq-Mars given to the 15th Meeting of the INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing held in Tallinn, Estonia in June 2013. The presentation also inspired the creation of a new INTOSAI WGEA Research Project on How To Increase the Impact of Environmental Audits being co-led by the Supreme Audit Institutions of Lesotho and Cameroon.
